Helmerich & Payne’s Actively C.A.R.E® Program Wins Inaugural Petroleum Alliance of Oklahoma Award
Helmerich & Payne is proud to announce our Actively C.A.R.E.® (Control and Remove Exposures) SIF (Serious Injury or Fatality)-based HSE program has been honored with the inaugural Reat Medcalf Safety Award at the Alliance Awards during the 2023 Petroleum Alliance of Oklahoma Annual Meeting.
The Reat Medcalf Safety Award, presented by the Petroleum Alliance, recognizes outstanding contributions to ensuring the safety and well-being of the oil and gas workforce. The esteemed award acknowledges Alliance member companies for commendable leadership and excellence in integrating Health and Safety programs into their business operations. It serves as a testament to the recipient’s dedication to implementing innovative safety initiatives in the short and long term.
The award’s namesake, Reat Medcalf, is a Carnegie Medal winner and a true hero who risked his own safety to save the life of a co-worker at an Earlsboro, Oklahoma, drilling site in 1927. The award commemorates his bravery and highlights the importance of valuing the lives and well-being of workers in the industry.
H&P’s Actively C.A.R.E. program stands apart by emphasizing the prevention of events leading to life-threatening or life-altering injuries or illnesses, in addition to the Total Recordable Incident Rate (TRIR) approach. By focusing on serious incidents, such as an employee struck by a dropped drill collar rather than a sprained ankle, the program helps ensure that resources are allocated where they matter most.
"Prevention of SIFs through H&P's Actively C.A.R.E. program allows HSE personnel to devote time and resources to preventing injuries that truly matter," said Micah Backlund, Director of Health Safety Environmental at H&P.
This approach exemplifies the company's commitment to employees and the broader goal of fostering a safe and secure work environment.
H&P has consistently set the curve in Health, Safety, and Environment (HSE) practices. As the drilling landscape continues to evolve, the company believes in open communication and sharing its HSE culture with the industry. Employees and stakeholders can anticipate future opportunities to engage and learn about the company's innovative HSE initiatives.
The Actively C.A.R.E. program's recognition with the Reat Medcalf Safety Award reinforces H&P's unwavering commitment to excellence in safety and pioneering new standards in the oil and gas sector. The company's dedication to the well-being of its workforce and the industry as a whole remains steadfast.
H&P continues to lead the way in promoting a culture of safety and setting new benchmarks in the oil and gas industry. Stay tuned for more updates and future breakthroughs. Follow the hashtag #AlwaysDoBetter to join the conversation about HSE at H&P.
